Don’t Wait – Act!

In a previous post I discussed the importance of recognising barriers to growth. But once you have identified an area of the business that is holding you back, what do you do?

The simple answer is: ACT FAST

Recently, we carried out a hugely successful project for a furniture distribution business, which resulted in them in securing a new contract with a customer that they had been trying to engage with for the past 2 years. A great result, but incredibly frustrating at the same time!

Why wait nearly 2 years? That company has lost around £150k by not addressing an issue that they knew about!

When a known issue is ignored, consider:

  • that your competitors won’t be ignoring theirs, and your loss is their gain
  • the costs incurred by the issue, compounded month on month while you choose to do nothing
  • the reduction in employee satisfaction (and therefore productivity) when an issue has been identified, but no action has been taken
  • that growth barriers tend to get worse before they get better. So doing nothing now means that more effort will be required when you do decide to take action.

There’s never a ‘good’ time to tackle a certification project, or improving customer satisfaction, or creating dazzling processes. In fact, when business is at it its busiest, or stressful, then that is likely to be the best time to take action (because the symptoms can be seen first hand).

No organisation I know of ‘cut’ its way to success. Every business needs top-line growth, whether it’s a Fortune 500, solo practice, non-profit or educational establishment. Unless you are creating more business, more excitement about your services and products, you will never retain excellent people, increase repeat business, win new business, or attract investment.
